Background of the Study
The linguistic landscape of public spaces in Benin City reflects a rich tapestry of cultural and historical influences. In Oredo Local Government Area, public signage, advertisements, and community notices display a variety of languages and dialects that mirror the city’s diverse populace (Eboh, 2023). This study evaluates how such linguistic diversity in public spaces contributes to social inclusion and cultural identity. The visual representation of multiple languages fosters intercultural dialogue and enhances the urban experience by acknowledging both indigenous and foreign influences (Omoregie, 2024). However, tensions may arise when dominant languages overshadow minority ones, leading to issues of linguistic discrimination and loss of cultural authenticity (Izevbaye, 2023). The research critically examines these dynamics by analyzing public inscriptions, media displays, and governmental signage. In doing so, it underscores the role of the linguistic landscape in mediating public communication and promoting societal integration. The study also discusses how urban development and globalization are reshaping the language use in these spaces, calling for policies that protect linguistic plurality and heritage (Osayande, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
The linguistic diversity of public spaces in Benin City is under threat due to the dominance of global languages and commercialization. This study investigates the marginalization of indigenous languages and the challenges faced by minority language users. Insufficient policy measures further exacerbate these issues (Afolabi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the linguistic diversity in public spaces.
To examine the influence of globalization on language use.
To recommend policies for promoting multilingual inclusion.
Research Questions
What languages are predominantly displayed in public spaces?
How does globalization affect linguistic diversity in these areas?
What strategies can promote a balanced linguistic landscape?
Research Hypotheses
Global languages dominate the linguistic landscape in public spaces.
Indigenous languages face marginalization due to commercial pressures.
Effective policy interventions can enhance linguistic plurality.
Significance of the Study
The study is significant as it informs urban planners and policymakers about the importance of preserving linguistic diversity in public spaces. It advocates for balanced language representation to foster social inclusion (Ugbede, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to evaluating the linguistic landscape in public spaces within Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State.
